Yesterday was a very special day for me. I made the trek up to Bellingham to accept the Distinguished Alumni award for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at my alma mater, Western Washington University.
This is the highest honor they give to alumns and I was very honored to be this year's recipient.
I've only been back on campus a few times since graduating 15 years ago. I loved so much of my time at Western. It was a small window of time in my young life truly dedicated to my potential. I was a few years older than my fellow students when I arrived on campus with my young son in tow. I had made the decision that I needed to go back to school - not for a better job or even better opportunities - but because I loved learning so much and in the years out of school I felt like I had lost a part of myself. So I applied to a few colleges, chose WWU, and took my $1,000 in savings up to Bellingham in order to start a new adventure with my 4 year old son.
