Everyone's Gotta Eat
What Gardening Has Taught Me (so far)
When I last wrote about my latest hobby as a serial hobbyist, I’m sure some of you were wondering if I’ve been able to keep it up. Is the gardening still happening? Is the passion still alive? Is it still bringing me joy? Or has it gone the way of the knitting, weaving, linocut, spinning, tatting….. Let’s check in!
Okay, first of all, yes, the garden is still very much a thing! It’s looking very green. The tomatoes are forming. The flowers are blooming. The garlic has been harvested. I’m battling squirrels every day (and losing) and I’ve made peace with spiders (the amount of little green spiders I find in my hair without screaming or wanting to shave my head is amazing - or concerning, depending on your viewpoint).
I’m still a very new gardener, but the important thing is, I’m still a gardener.
So why has it stuck? I think a lot of what I said in my original post still holds true. The garden is ever changing. It has enough wins - and enough fails - to stay motivating. It’s keeping me outdoors even in shitty weather (which Seattle has a lot of).
But it’s also been teaching me a lot that I hadn’t expected. So I figured I would write down some of the valuable life lessons that gardening has taught me so far.
